About Coed Lleol
Coed Lleol aims to help more people enjoy and care for woodlands in Wales. Whether you are a woodland manager, interested in forest schools, would like to know about the health benefits of spending time in the forests or are interested in natural history, the Coed Lleol website will give you the relevant information and contacts.

Coed Lleol is a partnership project hosted by the Smallwoods Association with a steering group of representatives from the Forestry Commission Wales, the Countryside Council for Wales, the Woodland Trust, the Wildlife Trusts, Tir Coed, the Health Service in Wales, and representatives of community woodland groups and self employed foresters.

Coed Lleol are running programmes in Aberystwyth and Treherbert following two innovative pilot projects in these areas to explore how woodlands can be made more accessible for people with chronic physical and or mental health conditions. This project is funded by the Forestry Commission Wales, and supported by the National Exercise Referral Scheme (NERS), and aims to get people out and about visiting woodlands for health and well-being benefits.

For details of current activities, what’s on offer and how to get involved please contact:

Following the successful 5 and 10 week pilot projects earlier this year, Coed Lleol are now running two 16 week programmes in each area. All the activities are led by trained leaders and, thanks to Forestry Commission Wales, are offered completely FREE! Activities are tailored to the participants needs, will develop according to who attends and there is always a gentle option- you certainly don’t have to be fit to attend!
This radical new approach to treating a variety of mental and physical illnesses is based on the natural environment’s ability to improve health and well being by reducing stress and providing opportunities for exercise. In this way we aim to encourage people to revisit and continue to be involved in the woodland after the end of the health project.

The two projects are running in Strategic Regeneration Areas, one in south Wales (Treherbert, Rhondda Cynon Taf) and one in mid Wales (Aberystwyth).  Coed Lleol is working collaboratively with local organisations, groups and individuals from woodland, health and community development sectors. Local partnerships have been established in each of the pilot areas to help shape the project and ensure that local needs are met.

The project aims to lead on to develop a similar but broader programme of activities across Wales in the future- get in touch if you’re interested in getting a similar partnership up and running in your area.
