icon DRAFT agenda for all Wales skillshare and seminar day 22nd March 2013 in Aberystwyth

This day will be great for all with an interest in the Actif Woods Wales project already, and anyone with an involvement in health and/ or woodlands in any of our current or proposed project areas, particularly those who work with people with chronic health conditions, or who are involved in woodland or health activities. Current and continuing project areas are Aberystwyth and Treherbert. Proposed areas planned to commence this year are Wrexham, Neath Port Talbot and Anglesey.

Lunch and refreshments will be provided and the day is free to attend.

This is an exciting time for the project as we have now secured the Big Lottery People and Places funding, for the 3 year project.  Match funding has been confirmed from the Forestry Commission Wales, the Countryside Council for Wales and the Pfizer Foundation, for the first 12 months.  We can almost see the project start date in sight and will have some firm plans to share with you next week.

I do hope you can make it for all or some of this day - please let me know if you are able to attend, and any dietry requirements you have for lunch, access needs or any further queries you may have about the day.

I look forward to hearing back from you and to seeing you all at the Morlan Centre and Penglais woods in a couple of weeks time.

We would like to invite anyone interested to a meeting of the Actif Woods Wales project, at Alyn Waters Country Park (http://www.wrexham.gov.uk/english/leisure_tourism/AlynWatersCountryPark.htm ) on August 14th.

Actif Woods Wales is a project to establish woodland based activities for people suffering from chronic mental or physical health issues. See more info in the Coed Lleol project summary April 2012.

We hope to start a new Actif Woods project in the Wrexham area in 2013, and are currently trying to engage as many organisations in the local area as possible, who work with clients with health issues and may be interested in referring clients ot the project (or starting a partnership with the project).
We are also looking for organisations who are involved in woodland activities (from conservation to bushcraft to mountain biking or walking) who might be interested in being involved in project delivery.

The meeting will take place at Alyn Waters Country Park from 12.00-4pm, with some of the activities taking place outdoors on the lawn and surrounding woods (please bring suitable shoes and clothes for this). A draft agenda is here: Agenda for Wrexham day 14th Aug, and note refreshments and a light lunch will be provided- let me know of any dietry requirements or access needs of those attending so we can try and meet these.

The aim of the meeting is:

- to inform participants about the Actif Woods Wales project and our plans for starting up in the Wrexham area
- to gauge local interest and local need, to help us with project planning.
- to meet and consult potential project partners locally
- to discuss the kinds of activities we might run in Wrexham and who they might be most suitable for
- to try some outdoor woodland activities in and around Alyn Waters, to give participants a feel for the kind of activities that can be run through Aber Actif Woods

Please come to our meeting to find out more and see how we could work with you! Please do also forward this message to any colleagues or contacts you have who might be interested in coming along.

If you are interested in attending please let Jo Cooper know as soon as possible, so we can plan numbers. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or 01654 700061- and feel free to call for any further info. I look forward to hearing from you.

We hope to see you there!

Coed Lleol have recently hosted two seminar days as part of the Actif Woods Wales project.

Held in Aberystwyth and Treherbert on the 16th and 23rd March the days were a chance for health professionals, organisations and individuals with an interest in linking health care with the natural environment to come together with some of the participants on the programme to learn more about the approach used and share knowledge and experience, partly in a practical woodland setting.

Presentations included 'National Exercise Referral and the outdoors' and 'Nature connection and wellbeing'.

Some of the presentations from the Aberytwyth day can be downloaded from the links below- Treherbert ones to follow soon!

The 'carousel' of woodland activities in Aberystwyth was particularly well received, and those at the Treherbert day said they valued the opportunity to network with others whilst trying out some of the woodland activities included in the Actif Woods Wales sessions.

Feedback from those attending included some of the following comments;

“Very good to see how health professionals and service providers support each other. Great opportunity to network and ask questions.”

“It was good to network with potential partner organisations, sharing ideas/skills, reconnecting with woodlands.”

Two seminar days aimed at health professionals, organisations and individuals with an interest in linking health care with the natural environment are being held in Aberystwyth and Treherbert on the 16th and 23rd March respectively

The seminar days will explore theory and practice of the health benefits of green exercise, building on the knowledge and experience gained by both participants and leaders in the Actif Woods Wales project. There will be the opportunity to get out in the woods and have a go at some activities from green gym to woodworking.

The Actif Woods Wales project has so far focused on establishing locally run woodland health activities in and around Aberystwyth, Ceredigion, and Treherbert in Rhondda Cynon Taf, and has been funded by Forestry Commission Wales (FCW) and the Countryside Council for Wales (CCW)

The free sessions are specially tailored for people with a variety of chronic health conditions such as depression, osteoarthritis, diabetes and heart problems.  The project is supported by a range of health sector organisations including the National Exercise Referral Scheme (NERS) and MIND.

Activities include Nordic walking, green woodworking skills, bushcraft skills, plant and animal identification, fire-lighting and simply walking in and enjoying the woodlands, and are attended by people with a variety of physical and mental health conditions ranging from arthritis to depression.

Zena Wilmot of the Coed Lleol Partnership, which is running the sessions, said: "We all know that exercise is good for us, but going to the gym to get fit isn't for everyone.

"This project has shown that walking or being active in woodlands really can improve health and reduce stress at the same time as building interests, developing skills and having lots of fun.
“These days will be an opportunity to share experience, explore the science behind the theory and for people to network between the sectors. "

The Aberystwyth day will be held on Friday 16th March from 10.00- 4.30, at the Morlan Centre and Penglais Woods. The Treherbert day will be held on Friday 23rd March from 09.30- 15.00, at the Penyrenglyn Project office and Cwm Saerbren woods.
Both events are FREE, with lunch and refreshments provided.

They will be an inspiring and memorable days for anyone with an interest in health and wellbeing or woodlands in Wales. For more details, interviews, hi-res images- or to book a place please contact Jo or Zena:

This is an account of the first session back after the autumn break- written by session leader Andrew Dugmore

Well the 1st day back into the woods has arrived.  It’s late November and there’s still no sign of Winter knocking on the doors.  Late summer was the last time we met and there’s not such a big difference in temperature now as it was then.

We start off with our usual warm up, then we have a look at how our posture lines up as we walk.  We start to roll our feet and swing our arms and shoulders effortlessly, then it’s time for the poles, time to nordic walk again.  Into the woods we stride and we notice how Autumn is lingering and  how the leaves are delaying their inevitable fall, surely a sign of a mild autumn.

Soon we are amazed by a large gathering of white extended fungi.  Jo tells us of some of the biology of fungi and we stare intrigued and engaged.  We are unable to identify and name it but does that really matter as we stare and closely connect with another of nature’s marvels.

Further on we are drawn deeper into the wonders of Penglais woods and just below the path lies the wishing well.  Immediately a 5 pink petal circle  catches our eye as it floats timeless on the surface of the water.  From a far it looks artificial and I think of a peace offering as a new age alternative to a remembrance day poppy.  Down the steps to the well we drop and amazed we find the pink flowers are real and held in a wreath with ivy.  In the wishing well we see the poor pennies of perhaps some desperate wishes.  Behind the wishing well, hidden in the walled bank we glimpse the real well, functionally built to drink from, not just an ornamental delight.  We pull back the overgrowth and there lies an inviting pool of drinking water.
Into the open beech woods we go, a jay flitters from branch to branch and further we move along the path to the cliff tops.  This is not a power walk, blinkered to the finish but it’s a stroll and meander of looking, listening and feeling.  And the great open mass of Aberystwyth down below opens up, the Theological College, the castle, the harbour and Mair’s House.  We cast our distant looks to the southern coastlines and cliff tops of Cardigan bay, Newquay, Mwnt and Strumble Head.  We walk further along the quarry until health and safety and public liability says stop and we further mingle and watch as the bright new paint and refurb of Constitution Hill shines.

Time to return to the wood and to take in the out of time blooms of red campion, bramble and gorse. When will winter take it’s prey?  And we gather in that social opening of beech. A new found stump for a table, as a Robin gathers inquisitively around. Sit down upon a log and tea and coffee is poured to warm ourselves and to refresh us.  Plans and hopes are talked, passions stirred and emotions touched.  Hopes of woodland crafts, to navigate a compass and map, to forage the spring leaves for salad. Connections are deepened as genuineness is shared.

A quick time check is taken and unbelievably it’s time to return. As we leave, the master beech tree shadows over us, mystery and majesty calls.  I’m sure this tree will become a friend and teacher as the winter weeks of Penglais unfold. We walk for home past the holly bush rich with berries and  I wonder how many berries will remain uneaten by  next week.
