Community Woodlands
Friday, 13 March 2009
Written by Coed Lleol

Llais y Goedwig is a new association formed in order to support and represent community woodlands in Wales.  On the 10th February 2009 Llais y Goedwig held their formal launch at the Welsh Assembly in Cardiff, followed by a North Wales launch in Llanrwst on the 20th February 2009.

Elin Jones AM, Minister for Rural Affairs, showed her support for the development of Llais y Goedwig, saying:

“I firmly believe that community-led woodland groups can empower communities and nurture community spirit.  I hope the establishment of Llais y Goedwig will help encourage more communities to form groups to care for the woodlands in their local area and reap the benefits that this brings."

Local community woodland groups in Wales are delivering a huge range of public and community benefits, including recreation facilities, biodiversity conservation, rural development, jobs, renewable energy, woodfuel, other woodland products, opportunities for social inclusion, and outdoor education.

Now, through Llais y Goedwig, they will have the opportunity to join forces, share experience and ideas, collaborate to access funding and resources, and demonstrate to the rest of Wales the importance of their work.  Llais y Goedwig will support a growing community woodland movement in Wales to achieve its potential in supporting Welsh communities to make the most of the woodland resources on their doorsteps.
