Fersiwn Cymraeg o'r eitem hon yn dod yn fuan...Some of you have been involved in, and others know about, various small bits of research we've been doing on community woodlands, trying to explore the territory. These include a three-country comparison arising from the policy seminar at Cheltenham last year, a study of the community benefits of the (FCS) National Forest Land Scheme, and individual country studies that are preliminary descriptions of the current state of the art. To take stock of research to date, I've assembled the various reports on a web page. It can be found at: http://www.forestresearch.gov.uk/fr/INFD-7TSD7E There is a link to the Cydcoed evaluation. I am sure there will be more material that people will want to add, and the site encourages this. This is a step towards a more comprehensive understanding of the different models arising, which is now a more formal component of our current year's research programme. We'll be working towards a workshop (probably late 2009) to share experiences more widely. Comments and feedback welcomed. Anna Lawrence

Fersiwn Cymraeg o'r eitem hon yn dod yn fuan...We are currently working on a book entitled Woodlanders, for publication early next year as a highly illustrated hardback celebrating woodland culture. The project was initiated by Reforesting Scotland (http://www.reforestingscotland.org), but its scope is UK-wide and we'd like to include photographs of communities working in, discovering, and enjoying their woodlands. Topics covered will include: treehouses and shelters; fuelwood; wild harvest; woodland crafts, art and music; children's games; physical and mental health projects; education; ceremonies and celebrations; wildlife watching; access for all; native species; and community woodland acquisition, preservation, and reforestation. We are requesting submissions for photos that will help illustrate these aspects of modern woodland culture as well as traditions that may date back for centuries. If selected for the book, the images will help us to celebrate the enriching experiences that our woodlands offer. The deadline for submissions is 2nd October. If possible, we'd like photographs in jpeg format (minimum 1MB size) with captioning info, to be sent to Mae'r cyfeiriad ebost yn cael ei warchod rhag spam bots, rhaid i chi alluogi Javascript i'w weld. .

Fersiwn Cymraeg o'r eitem hon yn dod yn fuan...Welsh social enterprises are punching above their weight according to the amount they contribute to the UK's economy, reveals new research commissioned by the Welsh Assembly Government. The research found that the social enterprise sector in Wales had an estimated turnover of £2.18bn. That is eight per cent of the UK social enterprise sector's turnover of £27bn. Yet, for the same period, the overall contribution of Wales to the UK economy was only 3.6 per cent. The Wales Co-operative Centre is calling on Welsh social enterprises to enter the new Social Enterprise Awards run by the Social Enterprise Coalition. The first stage of the awards, which are the regional heats, will close at 12pm on Monday 28 September. Despite the fact that the Welsh social enterprise sector is estimated to account for more than 28,500 full-time jobs and 20,000 part-time jobs, a separate study commissioned by the Wales Co-operative Centre and carried out by the University of Glamorgan, found only 35 per cent of the general public had heard of the term social enterprise and only 17.5 per cent knew what it meant. http://www.socialenterpriselive.com/section/news/welsh-social-enterprises-create-big-value-have-littlerecognition
