Offa’s Dyke path crosses site.

  Victorian woodland set in 80 ha of parkland. Mixed deciduous woodland comprising scrub, mature woodland an on old orchard. Popular woodland walks with good access for the less able along way marked trails. Bird hide. Taped bilingual audio tour available. Wealth of biodiversity with the full range of native trees and shrubs together with some planted exotics such as redwoods and monkey puzzle trees. The woodland floor is a mass of colour in spring with bluebells, snowdrops and daffodils. The woodland is open all year; a charge is made for entry which also includes entry to the castle grounds which contain an art gallery, café , toilets and gift shop. The woodland and castle is well signed just off the A55 at St Asaph.

  SSSI, mixed woodland on limestone. Many rare plants in coppiced glades, areas of limestone pavement. Limited parking by bridge on A494, access is over the road, over a stile and up a hill.

  Situated south west of Ruthin, forest extends to over 15000 acres (6000 ha). Productive working forest but with plenty of space for activities and quiet enjoyment. Picnic area, car park, walks round lake and keepers cottage. Mixed conifers planted in the 1930s but with many older trees, managed with the intention of retaining mature trees. The Heart of the Forestry Commission Red Squirrel reserve. The most likely place to see them is among the mature Norway Spruce surrounding the car park.

  Large, popular site, waymarked trails, toilets, good car parking. Mixed conifer woodland planted in the 1950s on a number of steep valleys. Work now under way to diversify this with selective fellings and planting of broadleaves. Signed off the A 494 Mold/Ruthin road.  
     
  35- Nercwys  Forestry Commission - Clwyd - Nercwys

  Situated SW of Mold, mixed conifer woodland established in the 1960s. Carparke and attractive way marked trail recently installed. Well thinned with paths and open rides, interesting archaeology.  
     
  36- Wepre Wood, Connahs Quay

  Ancient woodland rich in plants and wildlife. Lovely mature oaks and ash with some areas of larch along the valley of the Wepre Brook. Easy waymarked walks with leaflet available at the visitor centre (toilets). Easy parking. Ruins of Ewloe Castle provide added interest. Circular walk takes in two other nearby woodlands. Well signed from the A548 in Connahs Quay.

  Large conifer woodland, mainly sitka spruce planted in the 1970s, which combines commercial timber production with amenity and wildlife management including one of the ralgest populations of Black Grouse in Wales. Facilities include an ecologically sound, Visitor Centre, large car park, mountain biking trails with extensive network of paths and fitness trail. Access with information board signed off the A525 midway between Wrexham and Ruthin.  
     
  39- Worms Wood

  Mixed conifer/broadleaf woodland, along the edge of the river Alyn, small layby for parking, single track footpath crosses the woodland. Semi-natural woodland with some conifer blocks that occurs on the north bank of the River Alyn. The western edge is a dry sycamore slope and to the north a wet alder woodland can be found on the flood plain.  
     
  40- Alyn Waters Country Park

  Large country park located between the villages of Gwersyllt and Llay. Much of the park is wooded with an oak/ash/sycamore canopy and two community woodlands have been planted on the Gwersyllt side of the park. Access – Gwersyllt side – off the main A451, Wrexham - Mold road, SJ 314548. Llay side – car park located off the B5425.  
     
  41- Tan y Cut Woods  
     
  OS SJ 281411. 8 acres (3.4 ha) WBC  
     
  Small woodland on the Froncysyllte side of Ty Mawr Country Park. The woodland lies adjacent to the river Dee and is a good example of a mixed broadleaf woodland with ancient woodland indicator species.  
     
  42- Moss Valley  
     
  OS SJ312523. 80 acres (32ha). WBC  
     
  Large park bordered by extensive woodlands along the valley sides, Well-wooded valley slopes with adjoining grassland.  The eastern slopes have semi-natural woodland, a canopy of pendunculate oak, sycamore and ash with some planted beech.  The understorey has hawthorn, hazel and wild cherry.  On the western slopes there is more recent woodland with a sycamore/oak/ash canopy.
