| |
The Forest takes its name
from Afon Hafren (River Severn) which rises in a deep,
blanket-peat bog, 800m outside its boundary, high above, on
the slopes of Plynlimon. Almost immediately it begins its
long journey to the Bristol Channel, passing first through
woodlands of pine and spruce. It is possible to walk to the
Source of the Severn from Hafren Forest. The Severn Way,
Britain's longest riverside walk, begins at the Source
with access at the

Ceri Forest is a coniferous
forest which sits astride the Kerry Ridgeway in the uplands
of Montgomeryshire. The Kerry Ridgeway, a long distance
regional footpath, runs from near Newtown in Powys to
Bishops Castle in Shropshire through the Ceri Forest |

Pant-yr-Eos is a mixed
broadleaved and conifer plantation comprising a total of
8.48 ha. Situated on a steep north-east facing slope the
woodland is dominated by conifer plantation with larch and
western hemlock the predominant species. There is a small
isolated block of young mature Japanese red cedar at the
southern corner of the woodland. |

The site comprises of
Granllyn Pool itself, a shallow partly vegetated lake, a
fringe of gently sloping former improved cattle pasture that
was mostly planted with native broadleaves by the Trust in
1999, and an additional field to the south west which was
purchased and planted by the Trust in 2005. |

A total of 3.24 ha Graig
wood supports ancient semi-natural woodland dominated by
oak, much of which is of coppice origin, partly resulting
from substantial felling c. 1920. Ash is also represented
with some sycamore, birch, beech field maple and crab apple.
Several large old trees, a potential veteran oak,
multi-stemmed coppice oak and field maple and an old ash
stool are notable. |

Gaer Fawr occupies a
prominent hill approximately 1km north of Guilsfield (Cegidfa)
near Welshpool. The flanks of the hill support semi-natural
woodland, most of which is ancient, with a diverse species
composition including areas dominated by sessile oak
coppice, areas dominated by ash and sycamore and small
patches of wet woodland with frequent alder. |

Typical of the area the predominantly oak wood Coed
Dolyronnen is on the steep sides of a narrow valley through
which runs a fast flowing stream. Some stonework and
ironwork remains associated with a small cottage indicate
that the stream was once used as a source of power for small
workshops alongside the wood. |

Coed y Graig is one of the
Woodland Trust’s ‘Woods on your Doorstep’ Millennium
community woodlands. It was created from a block of three
fields of improved permanent pasture purchased by the Trust
in 1998, and mostly planted with native broadleaves in 1999.
The entrance is off a narrow road (Lonesome Lane) about 1
mile from the centre of Newtown. |

Coed Gwernafon is one of an
isolated cluster of 8 blocks of valley side ancient woodland
around the headwater valleys of the River Trannon
immediately west of the village of Llawr y Glyn. It is the
largest of the 5 of these blocks that make up the Coedydd
Llawr y Glyn SSSI and European SAC - "A remarkable group of
acid sessile oak woodland situated on hill slopes around the
headwaters of the river Trannon". |

Coed Glaslyn comprises
11.2ha woodland and valley mire, surrounded by pasture, to
the east of Llangadfan and west of Llanfair Caereinion. The
site slopes gently to the east. The western, higher, parts
of the site support a mosaic of ancient semi-natural upland
oakwood and dense stands of bracken. The woodland here is
dominated by widely spaced large mature sessile oaks with
scattered mature Scots pine and birch (downy and silver).
Beech is locally dominant to the north. Younger birch and
grey willow are locally abundant/dominant throughout. |

ancient woodland occupying a south-facing hill slope

In 1966 the
fields were planted with Sitka spruce; 30 years later the
trees were felled and regeneration work has been carried out
under the management of Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust.
Today the reserve has habitats of bog, swamp, wet woodland
and gorse. Trees have come back – mainly willow, silver
birch and alder – and wildlife is increasing. |
